Who is Rebecca?
As a child I spent copious amounts of time with my mother, a teacher, who instilled in me an appreciation for all things related to history. After some friends got me involved in Renaissance faire, I was all in! My mother tried to teach me to sew when I was pretty young and, while I didn’t have the patience at the time to work with her, I found that I had absorbed many of the basic concepts that I needed. In 2001, I readily taught myself to sew and delved into 16th century costume. I discovered as I researched that most costumes at faire were just that: costumes, with little basis in fact. Through much dedicated research I learned about construction methods of period clothing, and proper garments for various classes and nationalities. Since most of the clothing I wanted to make did not have quality patterns available, coupled with my lack of disposable income, I quickly learned to make my own patterns. And so began my obsession with historically accurate period costume!
I was basically self-taught as a seamstress, pattern maker and costume historian, but I figured I should probably go and learn it for real. So I got my degree in Fashion Design and Costume Design for Film & TV from FIDM/ Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Along the way I learned to knit, bead, and leatherwork, applying my skills to accessories for costumes.
As I “grew up” my interests branched out, developing into many time eras and types of design, including architecture, furniture, and interior design. I became a Master Thrifter, and soon the house looked like a time capsule and I’d started an Etsy store. I'm a Costume Designer for Film and Television in Los Angeles and am intricately involved in Costumers Guild West, Inc.
